EC-24.8 Bring-Up: Finding the Fault, and Proving the Board
You can bring up a new board in a safe order, isolate a fault by bisection rather than by guessing, and write the record of what was wrong and what changed so that the next revision is a decision rather than a hope.
Before:EC-2. Electromagnetics and Transmission LinesEC-17. Industry and Research Experience
The first article of a new design almost never works completely, and how a team handles that hour decides how many revisions the product needs. The method is unglamorous: power it in a controlled way, check the supplies before anything else, then work outward from what is known good. The habit that separates the experienced is writing down each change and each measurement while doing it.
Work through these
First power: current limiting, and what to check before anything else
Applying power through a limited supply and watching the current turns a short circuit into a shrug rather than a burnt board. The supplies are checked and confirmed before any other question is asked.

Each stage depends on the one before it, so testing them in order means a failure is located rather than merely observed. Skipping ahead produces symptoms that are impossible to interpret.
Bisection: halving the possibilities instead of following a hunch
Choosing a measurement that splits the remaining candidates in two finds a fault in a predictable number of steps. Following the most suspicious component first feels faster and usually is not.
NPTEL: Electronic Systems Design — Circuits and PCB Design with CAD Software (IIT Delhi) · CourseRework: cutting a trace, adding a wire, and recording every one
A modified board is no longer the design, and an undocumented modification means the next revision inherits the fault. Each change is marked on a schematic copy as it is made, not afterwards from memory.
Proving it: the test that shows the board meets its requirements
Working is not a specification, and the board has to be measured against the requirements written before it existed. That measurement is what justifies moving to production.

A list of every fault, its cause and its fix turns bring-up into evidence for the next revision. Without it, the second board fixes what people remember rather than what was wrong.
