Start with something small enough to actually finish — a week or two of the real work, which will tell you more than any answer you could give today. Three optional questions order the routes underneath. You will get things to try and routes to read, not a verdict about your life.

Start with your field

These are the fields Funcognito can answer honestly today, because it has the subjects to back them. More will appear here as more subjects are written. Every field uses the same three questions and the same route structure — only the routes, and the subjects behind them, change.

Three questions to narrow the field

There is no personality score. Each answer only changes which routes you inspect first, and “not sure” is a real answer that changes what you get.

Something to try, and where each one leads

Nothing here is ranked, because ranking you is not what this page is for. Every experiment is reversible, and finishing one is worth more than any answer you could give today.

Not knowing yet is the normal position

Almost nobody can answer "what kind of work do you want?" before they have tried any of it, and being asked is not much help. Here is the more useful thing: small experiments that cost a week or two and tell you something either way. Pick one. You are not choosing a career by doing it — you are lowering the cost of finding out.

In the order they are written, not in an order chosen for you. Answer the three questions above and they will be ordered by what you said instead.

  • Electronics core: semiconductor, embedded and wireless

    The chip-company path: work close to chips, firmware, signals, devices or communication systems and let specialist knowledge compound.

    Good fit when You enjoy circuits, digital logic, devices, signals or debugging hardware enough to keep going when the first answer is not obvious.

    Try it — about a fortnight

    Two weeks on one Verilog block: write it, simulate it, and get it to pass its own testbench. If the debugging annoyed you more than it interested you, that is your answer.

  • Moving from ECE into software and AI

    Cross from electronics into software by proving you can program, reason about data and ship something another person can run.

    Good fit when You like coding, automation and building visible products more than analysing physical circuits, and you are willing to practise consistently.

    Try it — about a fortnight

    One small Python program another person can run from your README without asking you a question. A week is enough to find out whether you enjoy the work or only the idea of it.

  • MNC consulting and technology services

    A broad entry route combining technology, client communication, delivery discipline and the ability to learn a new business domain quickly.

    Good fit when You communicate clearly, enjoy variety and are comfortable solving practical client problems even when the work is not tied to one engineering specialisation.

    Try it — about a fortnight

    One page and five slides from a messy public dataset, then explain it to a friend in five minutes with no jargon. If the explaining was the enjoyable part, this route fits you.

  • GATE, M.Tech and research in India

    Use disciplined preparation to deepen engineering fundamentals and compete for postgraduate, research and other roles that explicitly accept the examination.

    Good fit when You enjoy technical fundamentals, can study consistently for many months and have a clear reason for postgraduate depth rather than using preparation only to postpone a decision.

    Try it — about a fortnight

    One timed past paper this week, marked honestly, with every mistake labelled concept, calculation or clock. The score matters less than whether the fortnight after it felt sustainable.

  • MS or research abroad

    Choose a specialisation and university ecosystem deliberately, then build the academic, project, financial and application evidence needed for it.

    Good fit when You want deeper study or research, are open to relocation and can evaluate cost, funding and career outcomes without treating admission itself as the goal.

    Try it — about a fortnight

    Write the full cost of one specific programme on one page — fees, living, travel, and how it is funded — and show it to whoever would be paying. That conversation happens now or in two years.

  • Government, PSU and defence technical routes

    Pursue mission-oriented or stable technical work through the specific examinations and recruitment notices that match your engineering field and eligibility.

    Good fit when You value stability, public mission or long-term technical service and are comfortable with competitive examinations and recruitment cycles.

    Try it — about a fortnight

    Find three current official recruitment notices you are actually eligible for and read them end to end. An afternoon. Many people prepare for a year without doing this once.

  • Startup, product building and entrepreneurship

    Learn by finding a real problem, building the smallest useful solution and speaking to users before investing months in technology.

    Good fit when You tolerate ambiguity, like ownership across technology and people, and can treat a failed experiment as evidence rather than as an identity verdict.

    Try it — about a fortnight

    Talk to five people who have the same problem, before building anything. A week, and it costs nothing. If four of them do not actually have the problem, you just saved a year.
