8.3 Footnotes, endnotes, citations and bibliography

Your references are consistent and you did not format them by hand.

Before:07. Word — CoreUnlocks:13. Portfolio & Certification

Footnotes, endnotes and Word's citation manager cover the referencing a college document needs: sources entered once, cited in a chosen style, and a bibliography generated rather than typed. It sits in the long-documents module because references matter most in exactly those documents. The common confusion is formatting citations by hand to fix a style problem, which breaks the automation permanently; the style setting was the right fix. The topic is also honest about where Word's tool runs out and a dedicated reference manager becomes the better home for a large project.

Work through these

  • Footnotes and endnotes

Notes at the foot of the page or collected at the end, both numbered automatically and both moving with the text they belong to. Manual footnotes stop being correct as soon as the document changes.

  • The citation manager, sources and styles

The built-in citation manager stores sources once and formats them according to a chosen style. Changing style then reformats every citation rather than requiring a rewrite.

  • Generating and updating a bibliography

The bibliography is generated from the sources you cited, and it updates as you add more. This removes the most tedious part of academic writing.

  • Where Word's citation tool runs out and a reference manager starts

The built-in tool is fine for a report and starts to strain on a thesis with hundreds of references. Knowing where the boundary is tells you when a dedicated reference manager is worth learning.

Practice file

  • wd-02-long-report.docx

A structureless multi-page report: no heading styles, a hand-typed contents page with wrong page numbers, two uncaptioned tables. Add sections, styles, a real TOC, captions and cross-references.

Opens in Word. Every name, number and address in these files is made up. No account needed to download.
