EC-19.4 The Bench: Breadboard, Iron, Meter, and Working Safely
You can build a small circuit on a breadboard, make a sound soldered joint, measure voltage, current and resistance correctly, and finish an afternoon without injuring yourself or destroying the equipment.

This is a first bench, not laboratory method. The laboratory course later teaches how to record a measurement as evidence, how to estimate an uncertainty and how to write a report somebody can rely on, and it is written for a reader who already has circuits and devices. What is here is narrower and comes first: which holes on a breadboard are connected, why a joint fails, how to put a meter in a circuit without blowing its fuse, and what actually hurts.

The breadboard: what is connected to what, and the mistakes that look fine
The rows and the supply rails are connected in a fixed pattern that is invisible once components are in place. A component bridging the central channel the wrong way looks correct and does nothing, which is the classic first failure.

Solder flows onto metal that is hot enough and beads up on metal that is not, so heating the work rather than the solder is the whole technique. A good joint is shiny and concave, and a dull rounded blob has not wetted.

Wick and a pump remove solder so a part can come out, and both need the joint molten before they do anything. Board damage happens from heat applied for too long, not from heat applied at the right temperature.

Voltage is measured across a component and current is measured through it, which means the meter goes in series and the circuit has to be broken. Leaving the leads in the current sockets and then measuring a voltage is how meters are destroyed.

Setting a current limit before applying power turns most wiring errors into a supply that refuses to deliver rather than a component that burns. Raising the voltage slowly while watching that limit is a habit worth forming immediately.
Working safely: electricity, heat, fumes, eyes and hands
Mains voltage, a hot iron, solder fumes and a clipped wire leaving at speed are the four things that cause real injuries at a beginner's bench. Ventilation and eye protection cost nothing and are the two that get skipped.
