You can search for prior work in a way that finds it, tell a peer-reviewed source from one that is not, read a paper in the order that extracts the most for the least effort, and keep references in a form you can use a year later.

A student who cannot find prior work will spend a capstone rediscovering something published in 2009. This topic teaches the search, the triage and the reading order, and it is deliberately practical rather than a survey of databases, because the skill is in narrowing a query and in deciding quickly whether a paper is worth an hour.

Turning a question into a search that finds things
The terms an author would use are rarely the terms you would. Finding one relevant paper and mining its title, keywords and references for vocabulary is faster than guessing better search words.

A paper's reference list leads to what it built on, and the papers citing it lead to what came after. Two hops in each direction from one good paper usually covers a small field.

Peer review means other researchers checked the work before publication, which raises the floor rather than guaranteeing correctness. A preprint has not had that, and a vendor white paper is advertising.

Title, abstract and conclusion decide whether to continue, then figures and results, then the method in detail if you intend to use or check it. Most papers stop at the first pass.

What was measured, under what conditions, compared against what. A result with no baseline, or one that reports only the favourable configuration, is a finding about the authors rather than the subject.

Full citation, where you found it, and a sentence on why it mattered to you. Reconstructing a half-remembered reference a year later costs far more than recording it took.
