E1.3 Reading practice
You can read a very short English passage and say in Telugu what it is about.

Reading a passage is different from reading a list: the sentences carry each other, and the meaning builds line by line. The passages on this page are a few sentences each, about ordinary days, and each one carries a line in Telugu saying what it is about, so you can check your understanding rather than guess at it.
The passages
A few sentences each. Read the English first, then check yourself against the Telugu line.
My family
My name is Lakshmi. This is my mother and this is my father. My brother goes to school. We eat food together at night.
ఈ కథ లక్ష్మి కుటుంబం గురించి: అమ్మ, నాన్న, బడికి వెళ్ళే తమ్ముడు, రాత్రి అందరూ కలిసి భోజనం చేయడం.
My school
My school is near my house. My teacher reads a book to us. I have a bag, a pen and a pencil. I like my school very much.
ఈ కథ బడి గురించి: ఇంటి దగ్గర బడి, పుస్తకం చదివి వినిపించే ఉపాధ్యాయుడు, సంచి, కలం, పెన్సిల్.
Water for the plants
We have small plants at home. Every morning I give them water. My sister opens the window. The sun comes in and the plants grow.
ఈ కథ ఇంట్లో మొక్కల గురించి: రోజూ ఉదయం నీళ్ళు పోయడం, చెల్లి కిటికీ తెరవడం, ఎండ పడి మొక్కలు పెరగడం.
Work through these
Read one passage silently, then read the Telugu line and see how much you had understood
The Telugu line is there for checking, not for translating word by word. Reading the passage first and the meaning second tells you honestly how much of the English carried through on its own.
Read the same passage aloud, sentence by sentence
Reading aloud is slower than reading silently, and that is the point: it makes you meet every word. A passage you can read aloud without stopping is a passage you have actually read.
Find every word you do not know and look for it in Everyday words
Most of the words in these passages come from the word lists you have already met. Finding an unknown word back on that page ties the two topics together and shows the lists doing their work.
Tell somebody in Telugu what one passage says, without looking at it
Retelling in your own language proves you understood the whole, not the words one at a time. It is the same check a teacher would make, and you can make it yourself with anyone at home.
