EC-12.6 Drives, Power Quality, Renewables and Safety

You can explain how a variable frequency drive controls a motor, say what harmonics are and why they matter, describe how a solar or battery source is connected to a supply, and state the electrical safety rules that apply to all of it.

This topic closes the module by putting the previous five together on real equipment. It is also the only place in the area where electrical safety is treated properly, and that placement is deliberate: safety belongs beside the voltages and currents that make it necessary, rather than in a separate document nobody reads before working.

  • The variable frequency drive, in one sentence and then in detail

    Rectify the supply, then invert it at whatever frequency you want, and an induction motor runs at whatever speed you want. Keeping the voltage proportional to the frequency is what keeps the flux constant.

  • Starting, braking and the four quadrants

    A drive can turn a motor either way and can also absorb energy from it while it slows. Which of the four combinations of torque and speed a drive supports decides what it can be used for.

  • Harmonics, and what a distorted current does

    Switching equipment draws current in pulses rather than sinusoids, and those pulses are equivalent to extra frequencies. They heat transformers and neutral conductors and interfere with other equipment.

  • Connecting a solar array or a battery to a supply

    A source at a varying direct voltage is matched to the supply by a converter that follows its best operating point and an inverter that synchronises with the grid. Both parts are the converters of the last topic.

  • Earthing, and the residual current device

    Connecting exposed metal to earth means a fault blows a fuse rather than energising a case. A residual current device compares the outgoing and returning currents and disconnects when they differ.

  • Working safely on equipment that stores energy

    A converter's capacitors hold a dangerous charge after the supply is removed, and an inductor resists having its current interrupted. Isolating, discharging and then verifying is the sequence, in that order.
