EC-22.2 Scattering Parameters, and the Network Analyser

You can interpret every entry of a two-port scattering matrix, read a manufacturer's data file for a component, and describe what a vector network analyser measures and how it is calibrated.

Voltage and current stop being measurable quantities once a component is a fraction of a wavelength across, so high-frequency components are described by what they do to travelling waves instead. That description is the scattering matrix, and it is what every data sheet, every simulator and every measurement in this field speaks. Learning to read one fluently is the single most portable skill in the module.

  • Why voltage and current stop working, and waves take over

    Measuring a voltage requires a well-defined pair of terminals and a negligible probe, and neither survives at microwave frequencies. Describing a component by the waves entering and leaving each port avoids the problem entirely.

    Two of them are reflections at the ports and two are transmissions between them, and each has a familiar name such as insertion loss or isolation. Attaching the everyday names to the matrix entries makes data sheets readable.

  • Reciprocity, symmetry and lossless networks, read off the matrix

    Structural properties of a component show up as relationships between the entries, so a glance at the matrix says whether a device can be passive or must contain something active. This is a useful check on measured data.

  • Reading a component data file, and what a reference plane is

    Measured data is quoted at a specific plane along the connecting lines, and using it at any other plane changes the phase. Ignoring the reference plane is a common and confusing source of error in simulation.

  • What a vector network analyser does, and why it needs a reference

    The instrument generates a wave, separates the incident from the reflected part with a directional coupler, and compares them in both amplitude and phase. Everything it reports comes from those comparisons.

  • Cascading, and building a system matrix from component matrices

    Chaining components is done by converting to a form that multiplies and converting back, which is how a chain of parts becomes a single predicted response. Simulators do exactly this and it is worth doing once by hand.
