GR-1.8 How GATE and public-sector recruitment work
You can describe the paper you are sitting — its length, its three question types, how the hundred marks are split and where marks are deducted — and say what a qualifying score is actually used for.
One examination is the whole gate for postgraduate study and for a large part of public-sector engineering recruitment, and most people begin preparing for it without having read what it is. This topic is that reading, and every fact in it comes from the organising institute's own pages, read on 2 September 2026: the paper pattern, the syllabus document for the paper you are sitting, and the page that lists what a score can be used for. The organising institute changes every year and so do the dates, so the habit this topic teaches is going to the official site rather than to a summary of it. No score, rank or cutoff figure appears here, because those change every cycle and a page that repeated one would be wrong within a year.

Read the question paper pattern, and write down the three question types and how each is marked
The paper is a computer-based test of sixty-five questions in three hours, set in three question types. Only the multiple-choice type carries a deduction for a wrong answer, and knowing which type you are looking at decides what you attempt when you are unsure.

Fifteen marks are general aptitude and thirteen are engineering mathematics, which together are more than a quarter of the paper. Most candidates prepare the subject alone and give away the cheaper half of the marks.

The syllabus is one document published by the organising institute, and it is the only list that counts. Marking it yourself, section by section, produces the revision order for the whole preparation.

The official page names three uses: admission to postgraduate and doctoral programmes, financial assistance towards them, and recruitment by public-sector employers. Which of the three you are aiming at changes how you prepare and what else you need.

The examination publishes the employers that have used the score and states plainly that the list is not complete. Each employer advertises its own opening on its own terms, so the notice is what you read rather than a summary of it.

A score opens a door and the employer decides who walks through it, publishing those terms itself. Reading one notice end to end teaches you what to look for in every other one, and when it was last updated.
