What this is and why it exists
The aptitude paper is the first filter at most campus drives, and it tests school arithmetic under a clock. Nothing in it is beyond what you could do at sixteen. That is exactly why people fail it.
The mistake is treating it as mathematics to be learned. It is speed to be built, and speed is built by timed sets, not by reading worked examples and nodding. A chapter you understand and cannot finish in a minute a question is a chapter you will lose marks on.

The vocabulary
- Diagnostic — an untimed set taken before any practice, to find out which chapters are weak.
- Timed set — a fixed number of questions against a clock, usually about a minute each.
- Chapter — one family of questions: percentages, ratio, time and work, and so on.
- Data interpretation — questions answered from a table or a chart rather than from a worded problem.
- Error log — one line per wrong answer: the chapter, the reason, and the fix.
- Pace — questions per minute. Fifteen questions in fifteen minutes is the usual expectation.
The mental model
Think of this as a measurement problem with practice attached, and run it in that order.
Start with a diagnostic: twenty mixed arithmetic questions, untimed. The score is beside the point. What you want is the list of chapters you could not finish, because that list decides where the next ten hours go. Practising the chapters you are already good at feels productive and changes nothing.
Then work the chapters in groups that share a move, not in the order a book prints them. Percentages, profit and loss, and interest are the three most papers lean on, and they are the same arithmetic dressed three ways. Ratio, averages, and mixtures are a second group: every one of them is the act of turning a worded situation into a ratio. Once that move is automatic those three collapse into one chapter, which is why they are practised together rather than a fortnight apart.
Time and speed and distance, and time and work, deserve their own attention because they are where most people lose the most time. Every question in both hides which quantity is being held fixed. The fix is to write down, after each set, the one identity you kept reaching for. Once you have named it, the hiding stops working on you.
Data interpretation is a different skill from the rest and should not be treated as more arithmetic. It is reading a chart for the one number you need without reading the whole chart. Ten questions in twelve minutes is the target. Most of those minutes goes on the first question, while you work out how the table is arranged. That is normal and it is not a sign of trouble.
The habit that carries all of it is the error log. One line per wrong answer: which chapter, why it went wrong, what the fix is. Most errors repeat. Within a week the log will show that three reasons account for most of yours. Misread the question, wrong formula, ran out of time. Each of those three has a different remedy. More practice is the remedy for exactly one of them.
Finish by repeating the measurement: a full thirty-question paper in thirty minutes, compared against the diagnostic. That comparison is the only honest answer to whether the hours went where they were supposed to.

Run a diagnostic and read it for the chapter list rather than the score. Work percentages, profit and loss and interest under a clock at fifteen questions in fifteen minutes.
