You can test stability with Routh-Hurwitz, sketch root loci, and predict how pole locations shape system response.
Routh-Hurwitz answers whether a system is stable without ever solving for the roots; the root locus answers the better question — how stability changes as the gain is turned. This topic teaches the sketching rules to the point where a locus takes a minute, because the value is qualitative insight rather than plotting precision. It sits at the centre of the subject: the mapping from pole location to response shape is the mental model everything else hangs on. The common confusion is chasing exact plots by hand when software will draw them; the sketch is for thinking, not for submission.
