Almost everything in this subject can be practised without paying, and this topic maps out exactly how: Office on the web with a free account, what a school or workplace licence already includes, and where LibreOffice or Google's tools are close enough for learning. It sits at the start so that cost never becomes the reason to stop. The common confusion is assuming the free versions are toy versions; for most of the course they are fine, and the few topics that genuinely need a paid plan, such as Power Query on the desktop or Copilot, are named so you can plan around them.
Work through these

Python in Excel availability · ReferenceWhat a school, college or workplace licence usually gives you already
Most students and employees already hold a licence through their institution without realising it. Checking before paying for anything is a two-minute step that frequently saves the whole cost.
LibreOffice and Google's tools: close enough for most learning, different enough to bite you in an exam
The free alternatives handle most everyday work and differ in the details, which matters if you will be examined on the Microsoft versions. Knowing where they diverge lets you use them without being caught out.
The five topics here that genuinely need a paid Microsoft 365 plan — Power Query on the desktop, Office Scripts, Python in Excel, the data model, and Copilot
A small number of topics in this subject genuinely require a paid plan. They are named here, so you can see the boundary in advance. Everything outside that list is reachable without spending anything.
