Formatting in Excel is about making a sheet readable by someone who did not build it: number formats, alignment, borders used with restraint, and freeze panes so headings stay visible. It follows the entry and formula topics because format is a coat of paint on values that already behave. The important confusion to settle is that formatting changes how a value looks, never what it is — a cell showing two decimal places may hold many more. Merged cells look tidy and break sorting and selection, which is why the topic teaches the alternative.

Borders, fills and restraint
Borders and fills are useful in small quantities and become noise in large ones. The advice here is restraint, because a heavily decorated sheet is harder to read, not easier.
Freeze panes and printing on one page
Freezing the header row keeps it visible while scrolling, and the print settings decide whether the sheet arrives on one page or seventeen. Both are quick and both are usually forgotten.
