OE-7.1 Overview of Wireless Communications

You can trace the cellular roadmap from first to fifth generation and state what technical problem each generation set out to solve.

Read the generations as a sequence of answers rather than a list of dates: 1G made calls analog and scarce, 2G digitized them, 3G added data, 4G made the network all-IP, 5G chased latency and density. The pattern worth carrying is that each step traded complexity for spectral efficiency. This unit is short and mostly descriptive; the real content starts with the cellular concept next.

  • Roadmap of cellular communications

    The whole story in outline before any detail, so later topics have somewhere to sit. Each generation solved the previous one's limitation, which is the pattern to follow.

  • First-generation systems

    Analog, circuit switched, and capacity-limited. It is here to be the baseline the rest improve on rather than to be studied for itself.

  • Second-generation systems

    The digital step, which is where most of the ideas in this course first shipped. The system architecture topic at the end returns to this generation in detail.

  • Third-generation systems

    Where data stopped being an afterthought. The change in what the network was optimised for is more important than the numbers.

  • Fourth-generation systems

    The all-data generation, and the point at which voice became one application among many. It is also where the transmission scheme from the fourth topic becomes standard.

  • Fifth-generation systems

    The current one, and the item most likely to date. Read it for the direction rather than the specifications.
