What this is and why it exists

Two problems arrive together on this instrument, and they are separate. The bow decides whether a note has any tone. The left hand decides whether it is the right note.

There are no frets, so nothing tells you when the left hand is wrong except your own ear. This is why a violinist's first year is mostly about intonation, and why the drone never goes off.

The vocabulary

  • Bow speed — how fast the bow travels. It changes volume and tone together.
  • Bow weight — how much of the arm rests on the string through the bow.
  • Bow change — turning the bow around at the end of a stroke.
  • Intonation — whether a note is at the pitch it should be.
  • Beating — the wavering you hear when your note is close to the drone but not on it.
  • Slide — moving a finger along the string while the note sounds.

The mental model

An even sound needs three things held steady at once: the speed of the bow, the weight on it, and its angle to the bridge. Let any one of them wander and you hear it immediately.

That is what makes a long slow bow such a good first exercise. It has nowhere to hide.

For the left hand, the target is not a place on the string. It is the moment the beating against the drone disappears. Learn to hear that and you can find any note. Learn a finger position instead and you will be wrong the first time you shift.

The work

  1. Start the drone.
  2. Draw the bow slowly across one open string, from end to end.
  3. Keep the bow parallel to the bridge and the sound even.
  4. Turn the bow around and come back with no gap and no bump.
  5. Repeat for five minutes.
  6. Now put one finger down and play sa on a stopped string.
  7. Listen for beating against the drone. Move the finger until it stops.
  8. Lift, replace the finger, and check again. It will be wrong the first few times.
  9. Find ri, then ga, then ma, one at a time, checking each against the drone.
  10. Never repeat a note you have not checked.
  11. Slide slowly from sa up to ga and stop exactly on it.
  12. Slide back down and stop exactly on sa.

What you should now be able to explain or do

Draw an even bow with no bump at the change of direction. Find a note by ear against a drone rather than by finger position. Slide between two notes and stop cleanly at the far end. Say why intonation takes a violinist a year.

Positions move with every shift and every instrument. The ear works everywhere, so the ear is what is trained.
