2.4 The same line in three speeds

Play one sarali varisai at first, second and third speed against an unchanging beat.

The beat stays where it is and the notes double, then double again. This is not playing faster: it is fitting twice as many swaras into the same cycle, and it is the first thing that makes a beginner feel the tala rather than count it.

Work through these

  • Play sarali varisai 1 at first speed, one swara to a beat.

  • Play it at second speed, two swaras to a beat, with the hand keeping the same tala.

  • Play it at third speed, four swaras to a beat.

  • Move between the three speeds without the tala changing.
