6.2 Sahitya: words, and the language they are in

Read a line of sahitya in its own script beside a transliteration, and say what the words mean.

This is where words arrive. The oldest geethams are in Kannada, later ones in Sanskrit and Telugu, and the repertoire further on adds Tamil. On Funcognito every line is shown in its own script with a transliteration beside it and a plain gloss of what it means — never a transliteration instead of the original.

Work through these

  • Read one line of sahitya in the script it was written in.

  • Read the same line in transliteration and match the two.

  • Say what the line means, roughly, without translating it word by word.

  • Say the words in time with the swaras they sit on.
